Myanmar, Lee Highway in Falls Church - Vegetarian-Friendly Burmese near Merrifield

Recommended Posts

I went to Myanmar today with a friend. Service was as described. I had the ginger salad and LOVED it! So many flavors working together, just the right amount of each, and a variety of textures, too. I then had the squid with ham and shrimp, and although I asked for it to be "medium" spicy (at the server's prompting), it was a bit much for me.

My friend had the squash fritters, which we both loved, and a shrimp dish that I can't remember right now (notes have disappeared from my purse), and she enjoyed it.

I'm probably returning to Myanmar tomorrow, because I'm meeting another friend who is a vegetarian, and their menu seems pretty vege-friendly.

Eve Zibart reviewed Myanmar positively in today's WaPo Weekend section, so it seemed a good time to start the thread.

We stopped by Myanmar today for lunch - about ten minutes to Noon - only to find lights off, door locked, no sign of activity whatsoever. They're closed on Mondays, but not usually on Fridays. Even more ominous - there were UPS attempted-delivery stickers on the door as if no one had been there for a few days. Any word on what's going on here??

That's happened to us before too. You get there and the place is closed, no note saying why, nothing.

I had a great dinner at Myanmar last night -- the place was packed and the service was as painfully slow as I remember. I would not suggest coming here on a first or second date. Or with people you don't have much to say to -- I saw too many people sitting in uncomfortably long periods of silence as they waited for menus, check, forks, etc.

We started with an old favorite, the (pickled?) Green Tea Leaf Salad which I highly recommend for those who like texture -- whole roasted peanuts, crunchy cabbage, and sesame seeds in a terrific savory (fish sauce?) dressing. All of the salads here (I've also tried the Watercress, Ginger, and Green Papaya) are extremely hearty and full of great textures and strong flavors. This is probably one of the only places that I could be happy just eating salad as my main meal.

For our main meal, we (a group of 6) had Coconut Curry Chicken, Beef Potato Curry, Pork with Fresh Mango, and the Sour Mustard Shrimp. We also ordered some paranthas to scoop up the great sauces with. The highlight was definitely the Sour Mustard Shrimp. I love tang, and this dish with its vinegary mustard greens and light tamarind sauce was very tasty. And surprisingly (as I grew up with these for Sunday breakfasts), the parathas were some of the best I've had. Tender, crispy (and good) greasy, mmm...

One thing I can’t speak positively about is the lighting – blue fluorescent tubes just don’t do it for me.

We enjoyed a recent dinner here. I had the gram fritter with chick pea gravy salad and the spicy pork curry. The gram fritters were crispy, but the chick pea gravy was more soupy in consistency than I expected. The spice level of the pork curry was on the low to moderate side, but good, and the pork chunks were tender. They also really piled the rice into the individual rice bowl they gave me with the curry. My two dinner companions are vegetarian, and there was a large selection of vegetarian items on the menu for them.

The only issue we had was the timing of when the dishes came out. We each ordered an appetizer or a salad and an entree. First they brought my husband's appetizer (chick pea tofu) and my entree (so I ate my entree before my salad). After a little while, they brought our friend's salad (bean curd salad). Then they brought my salad. Then they brought the remaining 2 entrees. It was a bit odd. But, we enjoyed our dinner which was also inexpensive.

We've had the same issues with staggered food delivery- entrees sometimes making it out before appetizers or as a general mixed pile on the table. Besides that, we're really enjoying this place. The menu is pretty vast, so I've been withholding judgement until we've found all the highs and lows. It's certainly been more hits than misses so far. My current favorite is the chilli pork belly, which I found to be rather spicy but may have been the wonderful solubility of spice in all that pork fat that made it hit me so hard. Your mileage may vary.

I've been trying to eat at this restaurant several times, each time arriving at noon or shortly after noon to discover the restaurant not yet open (they say they open at noon). Finally, on Thursday before Xmas, I waited until two employees were dropped off around 12:15. I then sat and waited, while a third employee started sweeping the floor. Then someone came and wiped down my table. Eventually, they brought water and menu. I wanted to try some watercress fritters but they weren't available so I started with some samosas - they were small, pretty good but not extraordinary. I also ordered N7 - flat rice noodle sauteed with my choice of protein (chicken in this case) and they asked if I wanted it spicy. The menu says it's spicy! In any case, I said yes, I wanted it spicy but it wasn't spicy at all. A greasy plate of noodles with dry sliced chicken breast meat that really made me think whoever was in the kitchen can't cook worth a crap. I don't know shit about Burmese food and probably ordered poorly but I know chow fun and this ain't much different. C'mon man - run the restaurant with more professionalism!

Coffee time.

The caffeine has yet to course its way through the recesses of my tortured mind, and I've been Googling "Myanmar DC" trying to get the address of the second restaurant, to no avail. But I know I've been there before, and it's just north of Verizon Center, so I kept trying, going through 8 pages of Google results, and ... nothing.

And then it dawned on me: Myanmar. Wait a minute. No, I wasn't thinking of Burma on 6th Street; I was thinking of Mehak which also used to have a Lee Highway branch in Falls Church (now a Taco Baja).

Coffee.
