  1. It's been a while since I've been, but of your list, Cityzen seems like a pretty reasonable bet. Most of the others have very popular bar areas, but unless it has become more popular of late or they have something particular drawing a crowd over there this weekend, Cityzen's bar is usually somewhere you can find a seat.
  2. Next time you can go to Levi's Port Cafe on 8th St. SE.
  3. I liked it too. I'm not sure I'm sick of them or that I feel the same way that he seems to (too much food...too much time), but his view is legitimate and I think he addresses and timely topic. I suspect most of his readers are still pretty much in the dark about tasting menus and the price, time, and sheer quantity of food involved in many of them. Tasting menus are a big commitment in time and money, if you aren't that into what you eat or don't want to spend a few hundred dollars on dinner for two, they probably aren't for you.
  4. Why's that? It doesn't seem very rational to me. I can see restaurateurs being upset when they are criticized in public forums and where a permanent mark is left, and I can see why airing one's concerns privately is a more appropriate move, but I can't understand why a rational manager would treat an online rant of someone they've never met any differently than a reasonable complaint in person. If anything, I'd think the rational manager would be more inclined to take the in person complaint more seriously.
  5. These are fair concerns and I don't think I would choose to post something negative including a staff member's name in anything other than really egregious circumstances, but if management is so unreasonable that they would fire someone over one complaint, doesn't that imply that we should hesitate to complain at all - whether in person to the manager in question or online?
  6. WFs reusable bags ($.99) are super bright and shiny, but work like a charm. Seriously, unless I jinx myself by posting about them here, I don't think it's possible to put too much weight in them. I highly recommend them if you can handle their bold color scheme.
  7. Tom S is rec'ing Dish as a mid-priced option. A little further travel, but also a reasonable priced, good food that should please anyone option is Dino. If you are going on a Mon or Tues, you could splurge the extra $10 for a 3 course RW menu. That said, if I were trying to keep close to a $20 meal, I'd probably pick an inexpensive cuisine and live it up casual style rather than go somewhere I really couldn't afford. I'm a big fan of ordering lightly at the bar or other means to access top notch cuisine at a reduced price, but if you've got a group and they are less food oriented and more budget oriented than you, you might be better served to give them something closer to what they want, which is more likely a full meal for a lesser price.
  8. It wasn't a perfect fit, but P St. WFs had lamb loins.
  9. Cathal Armstrong's Skillet Roast Lamb Loins w/ Herbs Roast Brussel Sprouts 2005 Torri Mor Willamette Valley Pinot Noir Chef Armstrong's recipe was simple and swell. The Torri Mor seemed like it could use a few more years.
  10. I'm a firm believer that not only are week night VDays a good night to stay in, but that they are a good night to not cook and instead have a smattering of prepless dishes. Second year in a row we've done olives, cheese, etc with bubbly and I couldn't have been happier. Mixed Greens Mixed olives Port Duck Pate with Aspic Boucheron Cantaloupe Roederer Estate NV
  11. St. Ex's used to have too much horseradish for me, but were both spicy and balanced when I was there a couple weeks ago. Not sure if the kitchen is as good as it once was, but I've done a few brunches here recently and they've all been quite good.
  12. 2 no 6 no 12, bakers dozen! i told you that i'm crazy for these cupcakes, cousin!
  13. We happened upon the now open Monaco Old Town when we couldn't find enough seats to eat at the bar at Eve. The restaurant and bar areas were both packed and it was pretty late so we just picked our way through the bar menu. The shrimp corn dog was lightly breaded and much better than it sounds. The crab cake, fries, fried apple pie/turnover, and vanilla ice cream were not. The space is modern and maybe a little overly hip. They do have 20 bottles of wine at $20 a piece and a couple VA wines (Barboursville) available by the glass. I'm not sure I'll rush back, but it looks like they've already developed a pretty good following. Some more details here.
  14. Sure does! And the El Diablo is a pretty cool cocktail (chile infused 1800 muddled with cilantro and lime). Actually Tiffany's entire list is darn swell. My only complaint is that I'm learning the hard way that her stuff goes down a little too easily... The hot dogs and the tuna sliders are still big winners on the bar menu, though the mini parker house rolls weren't quite as exciting as in the past.
  15. Beer list here has always sucked. Not many taps and bud, bud light and miller light has always been the most of them. I do think I saw Sierra Christmas Ale recently, but next to bud and bud light it didn't look quite so good...
  16. Argonaut has a new chef who seems to be trying to upgrade the food there. Granville Moore's is most likely to be packed. I understand there's a new spot called Napa 1015 which might be interesting. I took a shot at grabbing a bite from Horace and Dickie's last week, but the line was super long. I'd bet they are dishing up the best food over there, albeit from a crummy take out counter.
  17. Todd Kliman reports that Gordon Ramsay is "all but certain" to be directing the kitchen here by way of one of his proteges.
  18. Has anyone else ever had anything from Rao's of Western Mass/Boston? I just finished a bag of their Tanzanian Peaberry blend and am thinking about trying some of their other stuff. The beans are friggin beautiful - I mean really pristine - and the brew has some really nice winey notes without being totally overpowering. Or are there good local purveyors offering Tanzanian Peaberry, which apparently is fairly different from your average bean.
  19. Our pizzas last night fit with your theory. They still had lovely char spots, but four pizzas all came out about the same, which was floppy and mushy in the middle. And it can't be blamed on heavy ingredients when it's the margherita, right? Still some very tasty pies, but I prefer Comet or Bebo's style.
  20. Depends on if you are in the mood for happy hour and a few small plates or a three course meal. I'm a big fan of the happy hour here and haven't had any problems finding seats at the bar in the past. I suppose the Caps game could cause you problems, but I think you'd be ok at 5:30.
  21. Is the spit-roasted katsikaki a must try dish? We're going to celebrate her birthday on Friday and I was excited to try some goat, but the online menu suggests it's only available for two and we generally prefer to order different items and share so that we get to taste more things.
  22. Probably not the kind of help you are looking for, but I was amused to see a Rachel Ray trip to Aix and southern France airing this weekend.
