Thanks for sharing! I did not mention- there is a list of farmer providers in the restaurant. Not unusual except that it is in an airport.

My direct flight on Christmas Eve was canceled and I was sent through Chicago (O'Hare) on route to LA. Thankfully, I had just enough time in the lay-over to get a sandwich from Rick Bayless' place- Torta Frontera. I bought a very satisfying pork sandwich with beans and pickled onions and a side of guac and chips. The sandwich was on nice chewy baguette style torta bread and the meat was seasoned well and could be tasted along with the onions. Definitely on the expensive side, but a full stomach saved me from feeling riotous when the plane was delayed an hour and change as oxygen was installed (that and free direct tv for our inconvenience). ETA: ORD

I LOVE Attari sandwich shop! Try the Kashk-e Bademjan (eggplant with whey and crispy shallots). And Saffron and Rose ice cream is across the street for AMAZING Persian ice cream (saffron and pistachio and rosewater, along with traditional flavors.) They will let you try as many flavors as you want before you choose. I love this block of Westwood. ETA: This area will be on of my first stops when I get to LA at the end of the month.

Thanks Zora! I passed along the info. I wonder if it will earn me a few tamales..

Hi Everyone, Short story unnecessarily long, I asked the parents of my students to send in a picture of family food traditions (as many in my class do not celebrate Thanksgiving.) One mom sent in pictures of the 20 women in her family making 230 dozen tamales in Texas. They go to the tortilla factory to buy their masa. She brought masa back to MD because she hasn't been able to find any here. She is in Howard County and asked me if I had heard of any places to buy some in the MoCo area. Anyone?

I've had great shirts by Custom Ink. If you want work with a designer (vs. uploading your own) I have worked really well with Nightmare Graphics in Columbia. They worked with me on design and layout of the text. Anyway, just my 2 cents if you need another option.

I everyone, I was out in LA a few weeks ago and stopped at Saffron and Rose in Westwood. For an ice cream lover, it was life changing. They mentioned they distribute out here- has anyone seen their ice cream in stores?

I make this one from Real Simple with a few adjustments. I use apple cider instead of juice and add lemon zest instead of orange (and far more than called for) which really brightens it up. Sometimes, I add a little more sugar if it is especially tart. http://www.realsimple.com/food-recipes/browse-all-recipes/cranberry-sauce-10000001031609/

I've had great success with Maple Lawn Turkeys, 24 hours in a wet brine. My parents don't live too far from the farm so we get it there, but I think the prices at MOMs seems comparable.

ok fair, it is probably too far for a week day but I commute from here to Elkridge daily and Laurel is in the middle-ish, so not that far for a weekend.

I've had great corn from two sources this summer- Twin Springs Farm and Toigo. The Toigo corn has been discussed already but the Twin Springs bicolor is just as good. They only sell it at markets where they are the organizers and bring additional items from their neighbors. Definitely check it out- it is fantastic. It is definitely on the sweet side but it doesn't taste like candy corn, it has some solid corn flavor behind it. Comparable price to Toigo, $7.75 a dozen, worth it.

Thanks for bumping this topic lperry! I made grilled cheese and tomato soup for dinner tonight. The grilled cheese (trader joe's cheddar/gruyere hybrid on seven grain bread from wegmans) was excellent. My tomato soup... lackluster. I used this recipe promoted by Dave lebowitz. http://www.davidlebovitz.com/2013/08/roasted-tomato-soup-with-corn-salsa-recipe/ and its just blah. I would stir in some tomato paste or the like but the only one in my parents house (where I am currently housesitting) says best by 2007 and I am too lazy to go out for more at this point. The tomatoes (plum) and thyme are from the garden, garlic from the farmers market. Does anyone have a go- to tomato soup recipe? I'd like to try again.
