  2. Dah-um! This picture is worth more than 1000 words!

  4. Thanksgiving dinner, November 2007: OMG! What an obscene amount of food. Yet: I will have turkey sandwiches for lunch next week. Not to mention mashed potatoes for breakfast. BTW: Did anyone purchase a ready-to-cook or pre-cooked meal this year? Sister picked up a Cracker Barrel meal; her family loved it. Mom, solo dining this year, picked up a plate at a local restaurant; I'm guessing a local variation of Hot Shoppes. She raved about her meal. Way too much food at both tables, yet: they both sang high praises about their meals. But then again, they're both in Ohio.
  5. I dunno... There's something not right about bringing your own Tupperware, only to take home the greenest bird. Plus: where's the after dinner lethargy?
  6. Giant is currently offering a 16 ounce can of Phillip's pasturized crab for $9, normally retailing for $15. (The 8 oz container is $8.) Product of Vietnam or not, I'll be making my own crab cakes and crab imperial this weekend. Maybe even a mac 'n cheese 'n crab.
  7. And they fall for it every time. But, you've got to admit: the newbies take the task very seriously and do a damn good job of reporting back.
  8. Hmm. Head count of 20 within the first 24 hours. Just wait until those "work computer" only folks come back on Monday.
  9. Others' words, not mine. I actually like the place. Although I hadn't been in quite some time -- exes and all that -- I was last Wednesday for some serious comfort food. Didn't have the pho but the roasted pork and vermicilli "stirred" up fond memories. Aah. Who's up for a reconnaissance mission? Cleveland Park and/or Rosslyn? I'm looking for a new dining companion.(Otherwise, I'll be on Rt. 7... with a cardboard "PHO" sign and my thumb out. Thanks Zora! )
  10. Any recipes for homemade doughnuts? Specifically I'm looking for (1) cake/no yeast and/or (2) baked types.
  11. Sing along with me: It's beginning to look a lot like Winter Pho in every bowl; But the prettiest sight to see Is the garnishes that will be The sturdy kind that won't steal the show… Seeking Pho... good Pho... to be found on the DC or VA subway lines. Previous posts have eschewed Nam Viet in Cleveland Park. Suggestions? Recommendations?
  12. Orange baked pork chop Basmati rice Edamame Maker's Mark Manhattan
  13. Would you/could you do this without a rice cooker? What was the seasoned liquid?
  14. I'm in +1. But will probably need transport from the nearest Metro.
  15. Welcome! And congrats on your first post! But what a tease! No pictures of the tats? Or, the before and after 110 weight loss pics? Those (of us) who are still struggling with the Fit for Summer challenge could use the encouragement. Again, welcome!
  16. DR.com Volunteer Activity DC Central Kitchen Monday, December 24, 2007 9:00 to Noon LOVE TO COOK? In a 10,000 square foot professional kitchen? Then come play chef at the DC Central Kitchen (DCCK), and help fight hunger in the Washington DC area. DR.com members and friends will help cook, working alongside chefs who are graduates of DCCK's job training program. No previous experience is required -- just an interest in cooking! More information about DCCK. I have reserved space for five; the numbers can be adjusted. All members of the DR.com community – registered users, friends, or those simply interested in DR.com – are invited to participate. If you are interested in volunteering for this specific opportunity, please RSVP (so I can adjust the numbers), by PM or post, NLT December 10.
  17. Attached is a file of volunteer opportunities DR.com members might be interested in participating during this holiday season. Two organizations, Dinner for the Homeless and Needy (Thursday, 11/22/07) and DC Central Kitchen (Tuesday, 11/27/07; Friday, 12/7/07; Wednesday, 12/12/07; Friday, 12/14/07; Week of 12/12- 21; Monday, 12/24/07; Wednesday, 12/26/07) have specific volunteer needs for November and/or December. I'm still waiting to hear from Dinner Program for Homeless Women, Loaves and Fishes (St. Stephen and the Incarnation Church), and Food & Friends to determine if they have specific needs/opportunities for November and/or December. The remaining programs have an ongoing need for volunteers. If there is an interest in forming a DR.com group to participate on a regular basis (e.g., 4 hours, once a month, for six months) please post here. ETA: Okay; it looks like the file didn't attach. Will remedy/correct this later today. DRcom_Holiday_Volun.pdf
  18. I "second!" that sentiment. New faces. New foods.* New memories. (*OMG! Who knew you could redefine the hot dog!) A shout out to all who made last night happen.
  19. That was me! In fact, we asked for more candles just so we could read the menu! In the plus column: Proof is open for after-theater drinks and food.
  20. Split pea soup with pancetta or kielbasa (although I f*cked up last night's batch trying to double the recipe)
  21. I keep a stash of frozen grapes on hand to quickly chill wine. Toasted english muffin with a slice of melted cheese. Muenster is my current favorite. Slices of tomatoes and American cheese layered on Miracle Whip slathered bread.
  22. Is there any interest among DR.com members volunteering, as a group, this holiday season, through a community service program or non-profit organization, that supports homeless, poor or other marginalized communities? This could be either a one-time or ongoing community service opportunity of DR.com. Of the few organizations I have investigated (on my own behalf): volunteer slots on Christmas or Thanksgiving are “filled.” If there is an interest: I will expand my search for programs that might welcome a group on a weekend or weeknight during the holiday season. Volunteer opportunities could include: food prep; distributing or delivering meals; or, administrative/computer support. Goldenticket had suggested Carpenter's Shelter in Alexandria. I know volunteer opportunities are regularly available at DC Central Kitchen, Food & Friends, Dinner Program for Homeless Women, Green Door Clubhouse, and several DC churches. If you know of organizations – in DC, MD or VA – that would be appropriate, please post here or PM me: I will follow up and post the information. [Deep breaths now. Deep yoga breaths. Breathe. Breathe.]
