The Hersch
You can probably order one through Stachowski or the Organic Butcher in McLean. Was that directed to me or to PollyG (or to both)?

The Hersch
Directed to you. Ah, thanks. Stachowski's is actually very convenient for me, but I've never had them special-order anything. Is the cost likely to be even higher than their already impressive price-tags?
weezy
that, I just don't know. Worth a phone call to find out. Maybe the butcher in Eastern Market can get one for you?
The Hersch
Regarding a capon for Thanksgiving, I've ordered one online from D'Artagnan. Not cheap, but it wasn't going to be cheap wherever I got it. I'll comment on it once I've received, cooked, and eaten it.

Bart
Does anyone have a clue as to where I might find pickled ramps? Thanks! I suspect you're looking for something much quicker than mail order, but if you're not, I found this site: https://www.bethsfarmkitchen.com/product/pickled-ramps/ I was just using the google to see if they'd show up at a place like D'Artagnan and this is what I found. Josh
Thanks. Yeah, I have procrastinated on a NYE recipe, and find myself rampless. I'm going to order these anyway just to see how they are!
weezy
call Society Fair. I don't know if they have them, but they're the sort of place that might.
Pat
Thanks. Yeah, I have procrastinated on a NYE recipe, and find myself rampless. I'm going to order these anyway just to see how they are! This isn't something Erik Bruner-Yang might have at Honeycomb in Union Market, is it?
Josh
Thanks for the leads everyone. Great ideas. I'll update folks on where they can be found if/when I find them.
farmer john
This isn't something Erik Bruner-Yang might have at Honeycomb in Union Market, is it? They definitely had them earlier in the year (as I supplied some of them)- not sure currently.
Bart
John - Do you grow them yourself or forage them in the wild? I tried to plant them a couple years ago and had very sad results.
farmer john
They were foraged in West VA. I have tried planting them various places on my farm repeatedly with exactly zero success.
Bart
Thanks! I may try again, but it just go much less likely!!
farmer john
I have given up. There are plenty of delicious and interesting things that will grow happily here- you can only do so much fighting nature. This year's first experiment is going to be oyster leaf- seed just arrived from France.
Bart
Interesting. Never heard of them, but I'll have to look them up. Do you grow purple asparagus? I love them but I never see them at my local farmer's market. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places, but I'm surprised I don't see them just for the weirdness/unique factor. Mine seem to do better than my green ones.

They definitely had them earlier in the year (as I supplied some of them)- not sure currently. Eric has them again at Union Market, and they are delicious. hapatite
^Sur La Table, too, but call location first. Let us know what you think of vanilla paste vs. using beans (another good source for small amounts of beans now and again: Marshall's or TJ Maxx). FWIW, the paste's available at KA Flour online. I got my vanilla bean paste at Home Goods. I used it to make some marshmallows in the holidays and the difference was quite noticeable, in a good way! lizzie
I get the vanilla bean paste at either Sur La Table or Home Goods (not always in stock at the one nearest to me.) It makes a big, positive difference in a vanilla pound cake that I make frequently, compared just to vanilla. Basically I am too lazy to scrape beans. Rhone1998
Anyone know where I might find Asturiana fabada beans in the DMV? I am loathe to pay La Tienda'a shipping charges. Thanks!
DonRocks
Anyone know where I might find Asturiana fabada beans in the DMV? I am loathe to pay La Tienda'a shipping charges. Thanks! They may have these at Taberna del Alabardero. If I were you, I'd go into the bar for a glass of wine (a *wonderful* place to drink wine that just might make you a new convert), and send a note back to the kitchen, asking nicely who their supplier is - it might be an even better idea to call first. Can you substitute Gigante Beans? If so, Tom Power at Corduroy serves these *a lot*, and he'll be happy to share his source with you.
