Pat
I wouldn't sink another $140 into a picnic at this point, even if you will eventually get the other $200 back.
DanielK
Just FYI, reschedule probably means cancel. The pavilion facilities at Ft. Hunt are only open through October.
Ilaine
No alcohol in the Fairfax parks makes it a no-go. The right of the American people to consume fine wines and beer ought to be in the Constitution. We can give peace a chance for a while longer. Ilaine
And, if we are forced to reschedule, I bet it won't be hard to get one of the later October dates.
Pat
And, if we are forced to reschedule, I bet it won't be hard to get one of the later October dates. If the standoff continues until (or beyond) the drop-dead debt limit date of the 17th, that probably rules out the weekend of the 19th-20th, due to the time it will take to get things back up and running. That would only leave the last weekend of the month, presuming it wasn't already reserved, and that the shutdown has been resolved enough in advance of that weekend that Ft. Hunt spaces would be usable.
Ilaine
I just had a client, who works as a croupier in a casino in West Virginia, tell me that very few people are in the casino since the shut-down. Money worries. So it's not just government workers who are feeling the pinch.
John William G
I really love these picnics, but given the uncertainly of the park availability, I reluctantly join those who favor cancelling.
catharine
Is there any interest in moving the picnic to a private residence? We are willing to host at our house in Falls Church. The yard isn't huge but we've hosted plenty of large (50-100 people) parties. There is plenty of parking.
DonRocks
I don't want to stand in the way of progress, but we *could* always wait until Spring (if this becomes more trouble than it's worth).
DanielK
Waiting until Spring *is* cancelling, since we always have a Spring picnic too! I'm not voting on cancelling/rescheduling, because this Sunday was always a conflict for me, and now the next two are as well.
Ilaine
Well, I am torn. I made a commitment and I honor commitments. At the same time, I honestly do not believe that this confrontation will be resolved by this weekend. My crystal ball, cracked though it is, says not. It's not just the lack of venue, it's the money thing, too. We don't actually have a lack of venue, Catharine has generously offered her abode, but there is still the money thing, and I would expect that most people would rather not bring up their personal finances. Not that anybody asked, but my family is OK for now. Husband works for the Patent Office which is funded for several more weeks. So, I will give this until the end of tomorrow, and allow for negative notice (speak now or forever hold your peace) If we don't have a loud outpouring of passionate howling that the picnic must go on, it won't. lperry
I would like to see it happen. Those of us who are lucky enough not to be financially affected by the shutdown can bring more, and those who are not so lucky can bring what they can, or nothing at all. That's what pot "luck" is all about.
Ilaine
Well, I do not mean to shut it out. If people are passionate and willing to accept Catharine's generous offer, the show will go on! We are the few, the proud, the Rockweilers!
Barbara
Catharine should understand that she will have to post her address here, for all to see--as well as dealing with complete strangers in her home. However, if she's willing, I would suggest that she hire some help (for clean-up and such) and that we should all contribute to fund that (since we won't be contributing to the Park Service). She could give the address in a private message to the DR members who have indicated they will come; it will be each member's responsibility to let their own guests know where & when to show up. This is what I was thinking. We are fine with whatever the group decides. We are not concerned about the cleanup and such, but thank you Barbara for thinking of that. Ilaine
Well, now they are saying that the drop-dead date for the debt ceiling is Halloween. Can I have a show of hands? If you have already voted, do you want to change your vote? If not, I will go with the votes we already have. So far, reschedule, if possible, is winning. bettyjoan
I'm out at the moment. We don't have tons of fall/winter plans (other than Thanksgiving), so whenever this heaping pile of political mess gets cleaned up, we may be able to attend on a rescheduled date (and will make every effort to do so). 22209
With the low probability of successful rescheduling this fall, my vote goes to taking Catharine up on her generous offer to host with participants contributing toward any set-up/clean-up that will be needed. (whether this wins the vote or not, Catharine thank you for the offer!)
Ilaine
I gotta be honest here. The reschedule votes far outweigh the much-appreciated alternative of convening at Catharine's abode. So, as organizer, I officially declare that the official Fall, 2013, Don Rockwell picnic has been shutdown, and furloughed until further notice. In the interest of freedom of eats, if a renegade band of freedom fighters wants to have a non-official potluck, ya'll party on. Maybe I will join you, but NOT with roast suckling pig. thistle
I agree, as much as I'd like to think this mess will be fixed soon, I think that postponing until spring would be be prudent (& we'll all have much better stories to share)...let's hope we outlast this miasma of a govt. shutdown (& if we're smart, we'll vote them out of office). DonRocks
As long as we have everyone's attention, I resubmit my offer of getting some restaurants to co-mingle with everyone else this coming spring. This would be just like we do on the website - yes, they might have business cards next to their dishes, but nothing intrusive. I like the thought of our amateurs and our professionals working together as one community. You can trust me to do this delicately, and in a way that won't be commercial - these picnics really *are* our only completely non-commercial events of the year, and I always want them to feature our wonderful home cooks. I'm also going to make a harder-than-normal push for brand new attendees to come.
monavano
^ I support bringing in professionals. Who can resist picking their brains when it comes to food? I don't think it will interfere with the fun that is mingling with DR members and tasting each others' dishes.
bookluvingbabe
Hey, just wanted to mention the thread title should probably be changed to indicate that we had to postpone/cancel whatever we are calling it.
Ilaine
Well, I got a refund for the $200.00 advanced for the site credited to my bank account, so that's good, at least.
