Thanks Daniel (and KMango) for offering rides, but due to success in my job search (oh man, now I might actually be able to fund all this crazy eating) I'm going to have to back out as well. I'm really eager to get to dim sum at some point though, so I'll definitely be in next time. Enjoy, and I'll be looking forward to a report. - Gennaro

DanielK
I thought it was a great meal. 9 people total, so we got to try a lot of things. Pretty much everything from the steam table - siu mai, har gow, cheong fun, chicken feet, tripe, etc. All great. Roast pork, roast duck, and the "crispy pig", which is my favorite. Also, a new BBQ item - a roast chicken with lemon and salt/pepper dip. Very good. Pork buns, baked and steamed. And a half dozen different kinds of fried dumplings - when you get them hot, I think nobody does better fried dim sum items in the area. $20pp after tax and tip, and we all rolled out the door. I haven't been back to Silver Fountain for cart dim sum since we went there ages ago for the Dim Sum Comparo, but have been there twice in the past two months for weekday dim sum off the menu. schulju
Thanks so much to Daniel K for putting together a great Dim Sum outting at the Silver Fountain! It's been a number of years since I've been out to a really good dim sum meal. It was great to meet a bunch of the DR crowd for the first time. As the newbie at the event, I was told I needed to make the first post (thanks for waiting till the end of the meal to mention that Daniel!). There's no way I'll remember everything we had, but there were very few dishes we didn't like. I stole a menu on my way out to help jog my memory.. We started off with steamed shrimp dumplings, shui mai, steamed shrimp balls and steamed roast pork buns plus what I believe was a fried taro cake (Dave?). I didn't get a chance to try the seamed pork bun, but everything else was as good as I've had in the area. I particularly loved the steamed shrimp balls..so sticky and luscious. Next came a pair of deep fried dumplings..one shrimp and one pork. Pork won out on that one, unanimously I believe. There was a shredded taro cake, we joked that it was a 'Chinese latke'...but darn, if I had just had some applesauce it would have been perfect KMango and perrik were missing the veg, which we had to request. I believe it was broccoli in oyster sauce...but I just couldn't imagine going green with all that wonderful shrimp and pork on the table! I did have some of the pickeled veggies that came to the table, they were a great palate cleanser. Pork and shrimp rice noodle crepes made it to our table...I didn't try the pork but thought the shrimp was pretty good. Not the best I had ever had, but better than a lot of the versions I've had in the area. The duck looked beautiful, but I thought the skin could have been crispier. We had a bowl of tofu with mushrooms and other vegatables in a brown sauce. There was something odd about the sauce and this was the one dish no one seemed to like. I know there were a handful of other thigs on the table that I can't recall, but we were all pretty stuffed when Dave decided it was time for dessert! He managed to snag the last few egg custard tarts left on the cart and wow these were so flakey and light...these things are pure crack! (I'm ashamed to admit I stopped at Maria's on the way home to pick up a box...some of them even made it home ) I hadn't had the sponge cake before today. It's a little sweet, but you can taste that it's fermented. Perrik thought it tasted like sourdough bread, but I thought it tasted like a light beer! More food and fun than should be allowed on a Sunday morning, and all for $20/pp. I can't wait for the next one!
KMango
...More food and fun than should be allowed on a Sunday morning, and all for $20/pp. I can't wait for the next one! Excellent recap! I'd add that the shrimp-based pot stickers rocked my crispy world. The gingery tripe dish (which I snagged from our other table) stood out as excellent, as did the fried sesame balls with taro root paste. Whole-fried (head on) shrimp with scallion and jalapeno offered astoundingly rich crunch, although must be eaten quickly after served piping hot. The "my god did they leave ANY salt in the sea" oyster sauce took the steamed Chinese broccoli out of the running for me, but was a valiant attempt for us to bring more Vitamin K to the table. Ha! Vitamin K! And I'm KMango! I should be using that phrase more often...or something. Overall, an outstanding experience with well-executed dim sum favorites and (always) enjoyable DR company. The line was out the door when we left, so if you hit Silver Fountain, hit it early. Doors open at 11 on weekends.
goodeats
I hadn't had the sponge cake before today. It's a little sweet, but you can taste that it's fermented. Perrik thought it tasted like sourdough bread, but I thought it tasted like a light beer! Just to clarify things - what we tried wasn't sponge cake, but rather steamed glutinous rice cake. Sometimes (or usually?) it has coconut milk in the recipe as the sweetener, but you couldn't really taste it in this one. This link is a sample recipe of a variation of the one we had, with the bottom portion of the linked picture as what was served. Glad to see everyone and meet our newcomer! ol_ironstomach
Just to clarify things - what we tried wasn't sponge cake, but rather steamed glutinous rice cake. Sometimes (or usually?) it has coconut milk in the recipe as the sweetener, but you couldn't really taste it in this one. Rarely, I think; the usual sweetener in pak thong koh / bai tang gao is just sugar. Coconut shows up in the Vietnamese variant, and others. Description here, decent-looking recipe here. Great to see everybody at brunch, especially first-timer schulju! Let's do it again soon...DC is due for another comprehensive survey of dim sum.
